Okay, there was a thread of mine a while back called ns_nuclear. Its, mmmmeh, about this, mmmmeh, m-m-map I've been working on. The brushwork is pretty good, if I do say so myself. Yes, brushwork good. Architecture? Nifty, yes, nifty imho. But the t-t-tex-textures? N-nope, no luck with the frickING FRICKING ingFRICK textures.

See, the map is supposed to be an old space station. Techie, but also industrial. And old. Its got, like, nuclear reactors... and computers... and stuff. Yeeeah.

But, see, I looked through ns.wad and hl.wad and I didn't really see anything that was exactly what I had in mind. So, I made some textures myself. They're ok. Some totally beat some of the crap in hl.wad. BUT... butbutbut... they just don't fit. There's no harmony. There's no, like... Natural-Selection-Space-Station-ish-ness. It just don't fit.

So SOMEONE HELP ME! A suggestion. A link to somewhere with more textures. Ideas. Something to inspire me. Something for me to copy. Something for me to steal. I don't care! HELP ME!
Maybe I should make the space station... different. Change it. Like, not old, a little cleaner. But GOD, if I see another fricking Eclipse texture...

But seriously people, I expect better!! Are we all slaves to the SAME TEXTURES!?!? I say we try for some originality! Break free! Take our destiny into our own hands!!! WHOSE WITH ME!?!?
Those of us who have a feel for such things have gone with the only complete texture set available the "wall_lab" series.
I'm surprised no one else has done this with the other sets yet. Zazi and I are both fleshing out textures based on nos_wall2 and similar textures at the moment for my ns_kara and his ns_widow, but that's about it...
And evoL:ving:eviL, if you complain about my use of the 'Eclipse' textures in Veil (why does no one call them Hera textures? At least that's what I'm using in my map that I have no shots of and may never get anywhere.

Every real texture (i.e. not 'clip' or 'null') in my map comes from either ns.wad or my personal wad, which is composed entirely of custom edits I've made to the ns.wad textures. I'd certainly like to think that my map is unique looking. I'm using some textures in ways I've never seen them used, and I'm using some textures in ways I've seen them repeatedly used. It's not necessarily a bad thing for there to be a sense of cohesiveness between the many levels, with similar looking floor textures and stuff. There is a great variety of textures in ns.wad, and a map doesn't need to be made completely out of a single set. There are numerous ways that a level can transition and blend between different styles. 578 textures is a lot.
It's really a true mark of a mapper's creativity when he can create something original and refreshing from a 'limited' texture set.
I've got nothing against using the NS and HL wads. But I don't want to with my map. Just my personal preference.
What's driving me nuts is getting the look I want, and the look of NS, with textures that I painstakingly build from scratch. Its tough.
And KFS, the people who originally made the Eclipse (and yes, they're a part of Hera, too) textures are SUPPOSED to use them. Its just that they're so cool everyone ELSE <i>besides</i> the original makers are using them. In every map. And those maps are cool, but it disturbs me to see similar textures between so many levels.
Anyways, I'll put up some screenies real soon. I'll also put up some textures I've made.
