The deciding factor of a successful game
One of my fun experienced scenarios: I'm commander on NS_Tanith. As soon as the game starts, I build 2 Infantry portals, an Armory, and an Observatory. At first the guys are worried, asking me to build a T Factory. I assure them I will, and tell them to just wait at base for a bit and defend. Soon enough, I get the resources to build a T Factory, and a couple turrets at base. All the while I am researching motion tracking. I listen in on the hives, and find that they are in Fusion and that Waste is clear. I send a group of marines over to waste and fortify it with a phase gate and some turrets, while I have my designated helper at base build be a couple things. He helps build me a Arms Lab so I can start upgrading things, and soon after motion tracking gets completed. I tell my guys to then move to reactor room, and Happy Hunting.
We secure reactor room, and the resources are rolling in. I then just let my guys go out and hunt stuff, letting them have fun while I get researching started on Heavy Armor. The aliens eventually got 2 hives and took back Waste, but that was ok. I was going to let them get busy throwing resources at waste while I took a group of H.A/HMG marines to wipe out their middle hive, leaving them with one. Then I was going to take Waste back, then finally squash them. So I have a pile of Heavy Armor, HMGs, and Welders waiting at base. My guys get equipped, and start heading in the direction of their middle hive. I tell them to stick together and weld eachother like crazy, and they will survive. Now I am the all seeing, all knowing commander. I am the eye in the sky that is watching these guys. What I see is a pack of fully equipped marines attacking a Fade, then just one marine running straight into an alien infested area after the Fade and dying, then another marine following after he dies and dying himself, then the third marine running away and getting killed from behind. Now it's not the end of the world, I spawn more H.A/HMG/Welders at base, and equip a considerable more number of Marine players to the teeth (i had fully equipped about 4-5, with other light marines running around with HMGs they took before the heavy's could) and had told them all again to stick together. As the group moved, one ran off and died eventually. The other three went back into the reactor room, and began to split up again. One ran off after an alien and died, while the other two seperated and eventually died from lack of welding. The aliens eventually stormed our base, and killed us. I just spammed HMGs for the marines to have fun with while our inevitable fate closely approached, while a guy kept arguing that we lost because we didn't have enough upgrades. I told him upgrades could not exuse or even make up for the lack of teamwork that was displayed, but he thought that fullly upgraded LMGs do as much damage as HMGs, and that full upgrades is what wins the game. Silly me for not realizing that same conclusion.
- Stick together as a group.
I can't stress this enough. When the marines are together, it's hard for any skulk to engage them with force. A skulk has to put himself near his target to attack it, and when there's 3-4 blazing rifles at him, he usually won't survive long enough to even get close enough.
- Formation is important.
If you stand all bunched together, your bullets will bounce off each others backs while the Skulks chew you alive. Make sure your group is somewhat spaced apart from eachother, giving the room to strafe and evade skulks if they rush in packs or manage to slip in from behind.
- Fall back to your group for help.
If a Skulk runs in biting wildly, only to get chewed up by your bullets and run away wounded, don't go running off after him. Only pursue after him if your group is just standing around defending, and don't end up going too far. If the hiding Skulk ends up getting the jump on you, run back to your group. They will happily finish the Skulk off if he decided to follow you.
- Help keep your group alive.
If you are really low on health, fall to the back of your group and let your healthier team-mates take the blunt of the attacks. Chances are after the next battle, your commander will be spamming health packs for all of you. If you notice one of your team mates low on health and requesting a medpack and you are pretty healthy, put yourself ahead of him. Every extra member in the team still alive is an extra weapon laying down fire. Don't foolishly battle it out to the death thinking you can just respawn and rush back over to the group, they might not be there anymore.
If you got a welder, use it. If your friends just got pelted with a few rockets while engaging a fade, weld them up before they even ask for it. Monitor your team and who's taking hits, and weld them asap. If you don't got a heavy weapon, then stand around a corner and constantly weld your team mates as they are attacking/getting attacked. Massive welding like this is what can make H.A teams seemingly invincible.
- Target your enemy when he isn't targeting you.
If a Skulk rushes in and starts chasing one of your team mates, don't jump and spin around like you are worried about getting hit, charge the critter! If the Skulk is busy attacking somebody else, then he isn't going after you and you can freely concentrate on your aim. If he is jumping around the group biting wildly, then back away from the group. That way instead of having a Skulk running circles around all of you, there will be a skulk running circles in front of you, making him a much easier target.
Teamwork is what makes the Marines great, no teamwork is what makes killing the Marines even better.
Don't give us the enjoyment of hunting you down one by one.
