Console commands

to anyone who knows, what console commands are we going to
be able to eddit? I know in TFC you can change just about
anything in your console, even your fov! so what kind of
stuff are you restricting from the console and allowing
from it? and what impulses are you going to allow?
I think impulse 100 (flashlight) should at least be left in.

I hate mods that make you keep it at anything more
then 1

    I don't know the answer to your question really, but I do know that the NS team want to avoid making the player access the console.

    you never really NEED to access the console, just somtimes
    its more convienient if you have a decent WPM to adjust
    stuff through it then bind everything and remember where
    you did it (especialy stuff with variables). besides most of the console stuff isnt in the customize bind menu.

    Console use is definitely discouraged.  There will probably be an in-game menu that will let you switch teams, quickly adjust your music volume, your mouse sensitivity, your player name, etc.

    The console is definitely a dying thing for mass-appeal HL mods.  Using it has too much of an impact on fairness.  Of course, you'll always be able to customize all the big options through the menus.

    so it'll be similar to the Sven-Coop menu system, theres a whole lota options in it.. u should check it out

    I really love the menu system in Sven Co-Op. Flayra, I'm not sure if you've seen it, but it has all sorts of nifty things within it, and very simple to use. The one thing that stands out is the ability to kick players from the server using this console. I know admin_mod let players do this, but integrated with the game makes it a lot simpler, since very few people know how to retrive player id's, or the commands to use.

    But of course NS will have its own good people kick voting system. It doesnt even matter if people do not vote <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    oh and Flayra, if after an while since the release of BETA 1 people use the consoles for some things that wasn't planned, will you put that in a menu too in the next release? or will you just keep it.

    Oh I can almost guarantee that if someone is using some console commands because the menu can't do it, he'll either do it in the menu, or lock down the command (if it's one they shouldn't BE using).

    hmm good point, but I change my binds alot and im pretty sure im still going to use the console for that.

    Well sure, the people who know how to use the console will definitely be able to do so, and they'll probably get as much if not more out of it. But this way people won't have to know how to use the console to play the game.

    Oh I also change my sensitivity alot too, optical mouses require alot of changing to keep you with the best of em <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    I'm not going to open the whole can of worms about whether scripts\console is "fair" or not, but:

    please leave the console in? please? not the evil unfair commands (like changing speed, changing FOV, all kinds of stuff like that) but the rest of it?

    The reason I want console (or at least .cfg file) access still in is because I've designed a whole scripting system to handle team comms\settings\various other things for the quake-based console. I've adapted it to TFC, CS and RtCW, and I'd really like to be able to use it in NS eventually.

    What about things like grenade scripts? As in press-to-prime, press-again-to-throw? Ok, I don't know if NS *has* hand grenades but you get the idea. Making it so that people don't HAVE to use the console is great, but pweease don't take the console away completely!

    Oh I'm pretty sure Flayra will be leaving the console in. Too many people use it already. All he wants to do is extend the functionality of the console to the average RTS player (as games like Starcraft, Warcraft, and C&C don't have consoles, so they don't know what they are).
