Can the infection kill you?

I remember reading somewhere that the infection can kill the player in about 5 weeks Subnautica time. I scanned myself FAR before getting into the Disease Research Facility (if that even makes a lick o' difference) and the infection has manifested itself into the player.

Because the Sea Empress isn't implemented, can the infection kill you? Or will that not happen until she gets implemented into the game?

i haven't seen anyone die and itd be silly to implement that before the cure
