Crash Fish Blowing Up Their Nests

I've had a bad case of coming across crash fish plants that when approached, will agro the crash fish who will start his countdown for exploding, except he won't leave the plant nor will he chase me at all, instead he will just sit inside the crash fish plant until he explodes, which will in turn destroy the crash fish plant itself. This means that there will be no more plant for a new crash fish to spawn. Because crash fish powder is needed to make flares and more importantly the repair tool, impairing the ability for crash fish and their power to spawn at no fault of the player can be very frustrating.

I've spent the majority of my time in the game making fun of them for their poor evolution.

Anecdotally, you can domesticate crash fish; you also can still retrieve the floating powder from what little remains of their nest; I do still hope they make the crash fish, insomuch as their nests/caves are concerned, slightly less suicidal. I can understand sacrificing the "fish" to save the nest, but usually they just take the nest with them.

I can think of distasteful analogies, but I recall someone in chat remarking that "they must be prolific breeders" to sustain that sort of ecology.

At any rate, I've always had the impression this was just a kink in the AI's ability to path to the player, either through walls or similar, and that it is actually doing its best to get to you, and failing. At best, I'd like to see them fix the pathing, but I sincerely hope they still leave us ways of dispatching an otherwise deadly hazard.
