Even weirder for a reaper to be that far down I'm sure it would of been killed by the crushing force

OH!, you meant that it would be pretty big, not that my suggestion was c**p!
Now imagine an alien aquatic version of this same fungus, which may very well infect a large predator and then force it to act contrary to it's instinct and routine to seek out an ideal location from which the fungus could hatch and further spread its spores. The name "river" implies some sort of definitive current in the area, (an ideal place to disperse spores) and the terrain in the zone does have that eerie green fungal like gas along the sea floor.)
It probably only had enough life in it to get that far, And then it died.
