(a grunt's perspective)
A preface: I prefer marines to aliens. I win a lot more as aliens, but the marines are, I think, more fun. And much more challenging. I also don't like being commander. I'm seriously no good at it. I've tried, and can get the first hive pretty nicely, but I'm picky about interfaces and I can't act quickly enough as commander to be effective later in the game.
With that said, here's my ideal scenario.
Commander: I've played under some inspiring commanders and some commanders who have an unrivaled capacity for mediocrity. The best commanders I have GIVE ME A WAYPOINT AND AN OBJECTIVE. I'm not the greatest marine on the planet, but I love my lmg. I am TOTALLY EXPENDABLE, but if I'm just sitting around without an objective, you're wasting me. I don't know where the battle is... YOU know where the battle is. Send me there, and send me with a teammate. Basically, give me a waypoint.
You DO know that securing hives is pretty high on that priority list, right? I mean, you HAVE played the game before... and most hives have a resource node so maybe that should be our second node to capture? An idea, possibly?
Please, please don't spend all our resources outfitting my teammates who prefer the safey of the base to the excitement of the hunt. I don't ask for much (usually a welder if we can spare the resources) but I don't want you wasting the resources I fight and die for on NSPlayer who simply can't be effective if he doesn't have a shottie and a heavy armor. Just send me to a waypoint, and drop stuff for me to build or have me killing bugs. I WILL DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAY TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITIES, but you have to lead... or at least respond to our input.
Oh, and don't forget to upgrade motion tracking, and at LEAST the basic bullet/armor upgrade. It's a step in the right direction.
And please don't be upset with me when you think I'm wandering off alone. I'm usually returning to my last waypoint, because I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE BATTLE IS. If you tell me where to go, I'll get there... or die trying. I'm expendable but stupid. I can't see the map, I can't see where we need stuff, but I can see my waypoint and I can hear you when you talk. (Hint, hint.)
I feel best when I'm guarding a hive with a TF, a resource node, and few turrets and a siege or two... but it would help if you kept and eye on me and when I tell you that it's under attack... CARE, please. If we lose the hives, we really lose the game.
Let me sum up: Give me waypoints, give me objectives, give me a partner (someone to watch my six), and give US team-upgrades before you spend the money on hmgs and jetpacks... which are handy later but very expensive early in the game. And make sure you aim us at a hive every now and then.
Marines: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, USE THE FRICKIN' PHASE GATE.!
Don't wander off, don't chase the bait skulk (the one who shows up and then runs away?) Yeah, don't chase him. You're my partner and suddenly no ones watching my back when his two buddies sneak in the other door.
Oh, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, USE THE FRICKIN' PHASE GATE!
Another thing: don't stand around the CC asking for weapons. It bugs the bejeezus out of me, and wastes time. You should be shooting, not begging. And how many clips do you need? When we're being Fade F*cked, do you think you'll get off 225 bullets? Use the ones of you've got first... then re-stock when the threat is gone. I rarely can get off two full clips unless I'm attacking structures.
If you see me building, help me or guard me, especially if I'm exposed. I'll do the same for you (unless I'm on an urgent mission) but two marines are twice as hard to kill as one.
And while I'm thinking of it, don't whine about the commander. If we do exactly as he tells us and work together, then if and when we lose, we have no one to blame but him (or her, I suppose.) But if you whine about not getting a shotgun, I'll be wishing I could shoot you myself. The lmg is awesome... just use burst fire and be expendable.
Summary: Don't beg, don't over-prepare, don't waste time.
And use the frickin' phase gate...
That's all. Please let me know what you think.

Grab 50 extra ammo MAX, you are going to die in seconds anyway, so it really does not matter.
Maybe I rant too much, but waypoints are infintely helpful. Among my list of others...
