swamp
How about a very rainy and windy swampmap(like the swampmap in jedi knight). A marineship has crashed on the way to a mission on a very kharaa infested planet and unfortunately they discover karaa in the area. So they set up a base in the awful weather while waiting for backup and prepare to fight for survival.
Or maybe there could be a human researchinstallation nearby that they have come to bugspray after they stopped hearing anything from it? Hmm yeah this is better then there can be some good old metal corridors and the third hive could be located here.
Im thinking maybe 50-percent of the map above ground, with mountain walls, and very large trees(that stick up from the water) so that big areas of the sky are covered with the treecrowns and create a kind of ceiling(like de_predator) and then lots of vegetation and water. One hive could be set up between two of these trees, another one could be behind a waterfall and a third could be in installation. Who knows maybe marines could have some sort of small boats to go around the map with?
One thing that could really create a new dimension is the skulk fighting in the water, it would be like crocodiles stalking their pray. Some areas could be very deep, others just kneedeep etc you get the point. On the other hand when they get spotted, its pretty hard for the skulks to get away and survive since they move slower in the water. I think the water should be transparent, not muddy, or it will be too much of an advantage for the aliens.
Any good mapper interested?
I have this cool picture of 2 marines in a little motorboat driving through this mangrove-like forrest, looking in every direction as theyre heading for the research installation and high above them in a treecrown a skulk chuckles quietly.
Here Harry S.truman feel free to add this one to my "long spewing list of very poor suggestions."

they dont use boats, they use hover-craft.
but yes, a swamp (esp. a dark one...) would be very nice.
knee-high water with bits of floating infestation... sweet.
RIIIIIGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHTTTTTTTTTT................. good luck with that.
Personally, I feel that outdoor areas can work with NS, but much more care is needed in generally all areas of map production. Also, I think that as any area becomes more open, the amount of care and focus required to balance the area rises exponentially.
And Justin, is there any way you could take in alot of your ideas and save them up for a single threadrather than posting them seperately over several billion seperate threads? That would be quite nice of you if it's possible.

Ok which ideas dont you like? And no I will continue to put one or two ideas in each thread because otherwise they become difficult to find. But dont worry, I do a little "attack" with many threads now and then and then I dont start any threads at all for a long time.
It's not that I don't like the ideas. It's just that getting a map such as the one you're describing to NS mapping standards would be quite difficult. Outdoor areas in Half-Life are generally not quite as believable or aesthetically pleasing as their indoor counterparts.
