Disappearing Fauna?

TL/DR: Being in an area for a period of time seems to cause the local fauna to leave, and "Stalker Hoards" seemingly disappear from the game after a while, so if you don't loot them (or retrieve your camera drones within) they're gone forever(?)
Something I've noticed, but fauna - aggressive and passive - seem to "vanish" over time if you build a base in the vicinity. Not sure if bug or intentional, but it's terribly unfortunate when you build a base with the intention of observing them swimming outside your observatories and then head off to resource gather and return to find everyone's vacated the area. Stolen camera drones seem to vanish from the game world as well, but more on that in a bit.
Recently, I was in one of the Kelp Forests. I found this large space underneath some archways that had a pair of Stalkers swimming around, gathering metal scraps for their "hoards" , and I thought I'd build a small base there. While I was building the two Stalkers continued to go about their business. I found it amusing when one Stalker would place some metal in his "hoard" and then swim over to attack my seamoth parked nearby, his buddy would swim over and steal some scrap from his hoard to go place in theirs. This back and forth continued the whole time I was building the base.
Eventually, I built a Scanner room and the stalkers predictably ran off with my drones, dropping them in their respective hoards. However, after a few in-game days..... The stalkers (And their hoards) vanished, along with the camera drones. The scanner room couldn't even pick up their signals anymore; it was as if they just.... Disappeared. I found one of the stalkers some distance away, but not his buddy.
This happened in the Sea Treader's Path too. I built a base alongside the path where I knew the monsters would walk, and made sure it wasn't in their way. For a while everyhting was okay, until I headed into the Blood Kelp trench to gather some uraninite... When I returned, the sea treaders were gone - and they never returned. I remained there working on my base and just observing for a full week, and they never came back. I'm assuming they patrol the path, and so go back and forth.... But, I never saw them again after building that base.
I've lost many drones to this bug/feature because they simply vanish from the game world if I don't retrieve them from Stalker Hoards before the stalkers and their hoards disappear. As long as I don't build a base within a hundred or so meters of them, everything's fine. Once I slap a Multipurpose Room and a farming tray near them, it's like a clock starts ticking and counts down toward them being unloaded from the game. If this is a bug, I hope it's addressed so that the scrap piles (and possible drones contained within) don't risk vanishing when you leave the area, and the local fauna remains hanging around to keep the area looking nice.
Hopefully I explained that clearly xvx;
