Gorge Hunting

A non-Rambo solo mission
Well, since 1.03 has come out, I've been playing Marines almost exclusively. And something I like to do when I'm not commanding, is to leave the base by myself at the beginning of the round (sometimes disobeying the comm, but its for a good cause!), telling everyone on my team not to follow me.

I then crouch-walk towards the area close to their starting hive, listening for the pitter patter of gorge feet. If I hear/see ANYTHING but a gorge, I hide. Hide in a corner, hide in a vent, anything. If I hear a skulk coming, I hide (silently). Once I find a gorge (usually standing at a res tower), its time to open fire . Now my 0 rp **obscenity** just cost the aliens 13 rps.

Most of the time a skulk will find me after taking out the gorge, but then its respawn and do it all over again. Lurking around the map silently isn't only for aliens, it works amazingly well for marines . Marine players are becoming trained to look at cielings/vents/dark areas for hiding skulks, but aliens players almost NEVER look in those places. Meanwhile (hopefully), my teammates and comm are setting up some res towers/securing a hive. And its just rinse and repeat the silent gorge hunting.

I like to call it going "ninja", rather then going "rambo".

Agreed, but I usually kill everything that moves

It's a good tactic, since loosing gorges early in the game really hurts the Kharaa. If you can destroy a resource tower, it's even better. It also distracts the enemy, which might keep some of them on the defensive, and anything that weakens your opponents offense, is good for the team.

In the beginning of a game a gorge caught alone in the open always seems to be a good knife target. I'll fire an entire lmg and then pistol clip at them but that never seems to do the job, and since by then they are usually running for their lives, I just can't resist pulling out the trusty knife and finishing the job. This doesn't work too well once they have 2 hives though. Then they'll spew webs all over the place and leave you stuck helpless waiting for a skulk to run over and take a few chomps or they may come back and finish you themselves with heal spray, which is much more humiliating than getting knifed.

Crouch bunnyhopping is an essential "ninja" tactic. You can get places at running speed without making a sound.

You sir are the bane of my exsistance!! There is no Cause other than the Commander's Cause. Do you understand HOW much pain you cause commanders that are trying to execute any kind of plan. I truely hope to never have you under my command.

Next time, if you must preform this selfish act, against the intrest of your team. Wait and see if the commander gives you orders. If everything gets built at base and he doesn't tell you what to do. Go ahead and rambo to your heart's content, but NEVER disobey a commander's orders!!
    </repremand>

Other than the disobeying orders part, good idea, just next time SUGEST it to your commander and let him tell you to go ahead.

hehe Kaishi, I knew someone would reply with that

But I obviously don't do this in small games (like 4v4-6v6), as the few marines need to stick together. But in larger games, it doesn't really affect the progress of the team. And of course, I explain my actions to the commander, and most of the time they agree, heh.

crouch strafe jumping is the winnar!

I can't resist poking the cute waddlers with bullets... but surprisingly, they still put up a good fight before I take them out.

And in going solo, one of my favourite strategies in Bast is to directly head for the hive with the underwater tunnel, get it enforced, then swim directly to the furthest hive from the tunnel, and check out that hive there, even if I die, I made a useful recon; a very fast leap indeed.

its more fun when u let them plop down their first res node first
then its 35 resources down the drain

Gorge hunting is great fun. It keeps them out of hives, as no gorges = no offense chambers defending unnoccupied hives from marine infestation. If you can keep the gorges in fear, sometimes enough to keep 1-2 skulks on perma-guard duty on the gorges helps the marine team a lot.
