so i was just swimming when i came across a floating clump of barnacles (the untouchable things that forms on the cliffs in the safe shallows) floating in mid air without any terrain behind it. I could swim right through it. This must be a terrain glitch.

Yes, I have seen this too, and bits of Aurora wreckage floating in the air above the sea.

Yeah, i've seen those too. Sometimes I see them without any outer layer, just the inside!
