Starting Life Pod area missing terrain on Mac

I'm on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) running OS-X 10.11.5.
I came back from the southern island and it took a long time to get to my life pod (the starting one). When I got there I noticed that the area around it was missing including my underwater base. Climbing to the top of the pod I couldn't see the crashed ship or anything else.
I managed to swim to the northern island and part way there the terrain, flora and fauna started rendering again.
Now I can't get back to my pod at all although the rest of the terrain not around the pod is accessible.
Also, if I start a new game everything works again.
Can anyone please help?
