Items disappear into the sand forever!

So far I have had a dive real which I left anchored to a spot dig down into the sand over 50ft on its own. Tried getting it back by following the line but after a while it got to the point where I would drown if I kept going.
Later I gave several metal scraps to a stalker to get teeth. They also disappeared under the ground showing up on my HUD from the scanner room. I terraformed my way down to them but when I get to the level that they are they disappear from the HUD. Dig down further and the scanner room on the HUD shows them above me but none in sight.
