"conventional weapons"... where are they?

When searching through the Subnautica Wiki, looking to see what personal weapons we have besides the survival knife, I find this under the Stasis Rifle:
Due to high power consumption and non-lethality, conventional weapons are recommended for personal defense.
Conventional weapons, hummm? OK, where are they?
I can't find anything aside from the Stasis Rifle, that you can use while diving to protect yourself. Yes we have the survival knife, but have you tried going head to head with a Stalker just using the knife. It usually doesn't end well.
Since there is mention of conventional weapons, why aren't they in the game?
Are there any plans for a straight up "point, pull trigger and do damage to target" type of weapon?

The game designer is (in real life) not a fan of firearms, and wanted to create a game that has no firearms in it. Subnautica is that game. They will likely _never_ add a conventional pistol/rifle/etc to the game, period. There's been some discussion on that aspect by the devs in the past.
They do recognize the need/desire to be able to defend yourself from hostile critters, however, so they have included some tools in game to help with that - Propulsion Cannon, Repulsion Cannon, Stasis Rifle, various torpedoes for the Seamoth, a Perimeter Defense System for the Seamoth, and so forth. None are designed to be *automatically* lethal, in keeping with the game designers overall theme of limited violence.
Many players have found ways to work around these 'soft limits' and kill off predators anyway. Ramming with a submarine, or freezing a predator in stasis and then carving it up with the knife, for example. You *can* kill things in the game, but you will not be given a simple, easy way to do it (as in 'no firearms').
Hope that answers your basic questions, before the 'Not Even A Spear' crowd comes out to shout you down for asking.
However as scubamatt said:
So what is stopping fabricator from making a man-portable version of this device. It's in the game, so it already passes the Dev's "No Gun" policy.
However if you are all so determined to make this a rainbows and butterflies care-bear game, than ANYTHING dealing damage (eg. Seamoth Torpedoes) should be removed from the game.
As far as the 'back story' reason for not having guns on the Aurora, there are a few of schools of thought about that.
First you have the raving militant peaceniks who think that because nobody eats 'natural' food in the game universe (only synthetic stuff) that means they don't do violence as a culture. There are a couple of huge flaws in that theory, not least of which is that Alterra Arms Corporation is the people who own the ship you crashed on, and they make the survival knife you have. There has been a great deal of heated debate and name calling over this in the forums in the past year.
Another theory is that the Fabricator can only make things it has blueprints for (hence your need to scan fragments and so forth to improve the number of recipes it has). Nobody in their right mind wants a random spaceship passenger Fabricating an assault rifle, bazooka or grenade while we're all traveling along in space (holes in spaceships are a Bad Thing), so there's simply no recipes for them in the Fabricator (which is part of a **Life Pod** anyway). In real life they don't stock life boats on ships with firearms and explosives, so they don't in space ships either. I can accept this theory, as its not unreasonable, given the scenario. This also explains why it can't make modifications beyond those in the Modification Station recipe list. Its simply not programmed for it.
Another theory is that your character is not one of the folks who would know how to build a firearm (either from lack of knowledge, or from cultural conditioning as they are illegal/expensive/rare/whatever). So you have to make do with what the system has to offer.
FWIW, I'm one of those 'yes, I cheerfully kill the predators in a variety of ways' survivors. I blame the Army and real world survival training.
I once thought you had to slay the Stalkers to get their teeth, when I first played Subnautica. After realizing how wrong I was, the only time a Stalker passes away at my hands is when I'm not paying attention while driving the Seamoth through the kelp forest at high speeds ^^:
The only time I really take a more lethal approach to fauna when playing is with the Bleeders and Biters; everything else I'm content to dodge where possible. Though sometimes the Sand and Bone sharks have such dense numbers in a single area I'm highly tempted to bump a few off if just to allow myself a little breathing room...
As far as I'm concerned, the game would be pretty darn boring if I neutralized all the hostile life in it. Other than oxygen and possibly starvation, they're the only real threats in the game while exploring. There's no dangerous weather, or strong water currents, or much else that can go Horribly Wrong... So having them around is a good thing to me.
Sure, you say that now, but when you see the space pirates landing their ships around the Aurora and they send out guys to search for 'witnesses'...life is gonna get a whole lot more exciting. (wink)
