Subnautica does not play in true fullscreen mode. Only borderless fullscreen and windowed.

As the title suggests, this game does not have an option to enable true exclusive fullscreen. The F3 in-game menu doesn't have any way of changing the way the game is being displayed.

This problem was reported about a year ago, and it seems that developers didn't fix the issue: https://trello.com/c/04jeY8dG/722-18592-game-never-runs-in-true-fullscreen

If there's no way to force the game to run in true exclusive fullscreen, then the developers should at least patch it into an update. A good example is the game Rust, another Unity Engine game (I'm sure everyone knows Rust by now). That game, and Elder Scrolls online had the exact same issue until it was fixed due to quite a bit of complaining. Developers should pay much closer attention to small details like this, since Unity runs games using borderless fullscreen by default in DirectX 11. Again, the same problem has plagued many other Unity engine games and was fixed because the of the community's complaints.

What are the advantages of having so called "true" full screen as opposed to borderless full screen? I play on Stream and as far as I'm concerned it plays full screen, that is, the game screen stretches from edge/corner to edge/corner of my screen. I don't have any issue with the current set up.

Exclusive fullscreen increases your performance in any game. Borderless fullscreen cuts your framerate down, and doesn't allow the use of SLI/Crossfire setups.

UWE cannot fix this - it is up to the Unity engine developers.

That said, the ability to specify video mode should be available in Unity 5.4.0, which is currently in beta. Subnautica is currently running Unity 5.3.x. It is unclear when Subnautica will upgrade to Unity 5.4, as SN is nearing a point where refactoring for another big engine update could push back their deadlines.

    From: https://unity3d.com/unity/beta/unity5.4.0b11
Added a -window-mode command line argument to override full-screen behaviour. Options: exclusive, borderless
