what use is the large aquarium?

It looks nice, it is cool, it is the best way to move from one level to another.

I read hints there is something more important that you do with the fish that hatches in the aquarium. What is that exactly?

    Large Aquariums are great for storing Airsacks and Peepers for Survival mode. Store a couple of each and you will eventually have plenty of fish for your food and water needs.

    Also, almost any creature can be stored in the Large Aquarium provided you have their egg and drop it in. So if you want a Reefback, Stalker, or Bone Shark, then you need to have the appropriate egg.

    There are a few things it's best used for.

    1: Going up levels like you stated
    2: Food source
    3: Indoor Creepvine Lamps
    4: Safe Scanning of Dangerous Creatures (Stalkers, Sand Sharks, etc.)
    5: Once the species analyzer is hopefully added and maybe attachable to the aquarium, thorough analysis of local fauna
