How do you go about approaching hostile wrecks?

Since fragments have largely been moved to wrecks, there is now more of a need to get to them regardless of hostile creatures in the area. Sometimes there are just one or two nasties around, but sometimes there are whole schools of sandsharks etc.
What is your mindset when you know you need a piece of wreckage, but you are faced with overwhelming odds?

But there's nothing that scary in this game. No need to kill anything. Plenty of gadgets to keep you safe. Stasis rifle. Repulsion gun. Current generators. Etc. etc. etc.
I was more referring to the early game where you have maybe a knife and seamoth/glide.
Personally I have settled on the second option myself, kiting them away one at a time - though it would be fair to say I've been through phases of all of these at different points!
That's never the case. Many players ignore them but these gadgets are very effective at dealing with threats. The grav sphere will attract all small objects, including small fish. Biters are small fish. The current generator generates a current strong enough to repel probably anything except a reaper.
I'll admit I rarely bother with them myself. Or even the stasis rifle or repulsion gun when they're available. I'm experienced enough with the game to observe and time my movements so that I rarely get bitten. And I carry a medkit or 2.
I know what I'll be playing with after dinner
First you need the seamoth and upgraded ASAP. With the upgraded seamoth you lure all predators to yourself and then kill the biters with a long range shock. Do not forget to wait for daytime to explore the wreck.
Until you haven't found the moonpool and seamoth upgrade station in the wrecks, you either have to lure the biters, slow them with the stasis, or use the propulsion cannon. Your equipment so far should include the rebreather, HC tanks and the ultraglide fins. Don't try to do much without them. So again it's finding the mod station fragments first.
Second, you do a quick shock before exiting the seamoth to avoid getting caught off guard, each time you leave the seamoth which you place before the entrance and thus keeping the big predators outside. Once inside it's more a fight against time than creatures.
Inside, you need to explore stepwise. The HC and UGfins will give you lots of time and even allow to escape creatures.
Summary: It's a chain of strategies until you have found the right tech in wrecks. Then it gets easy with the long range shock to clear the outside and being fast on the inside.
@Halios You probably use UGfins like me to outswim most less guarded places and don't care to get bitten sometimes. With the right fins we can ignore the bonesharks at the underwater isles and even pick our magnetite with biters around us.
as @zetachron pointed out, exploring Wrecks (specially the ones at lower depths) require preparation if you wish to survive the expedition and of course do that during daytime!. Having enough airtanks so you dont drown halfway up or down the thing is essential as well as well as having good fins to be able to swim fast and avoid enemies if necessary.
Personally, i almost never use the prop/rep cannons, my trusty knife (and stasis riffle if ive discovered it for added security) is enough. If i have not yet the Seamoth i use the air bladder to go back to surface to replenish air fast. The most important thing to do in ALL cases is to not panic and stay sharp. specially in Hardcore mode, the slightest mistake means game over so panic is your worse enemy.
The only predator i kill are the biters, the other ones i simply evade till they loose interest in me. i always try to kill as few predators as i can but since the biters have a nasty habit of ganging up on you its about impossible to loose them in the tight corridors of wrecks.
