First Questions I Had As A New Player

...and I'm still a new player, so I still find I'm learning things.

The first thing I think the veteran players should keep in mind is that this game is relatively new, so there are alot of newbies coming on board. Thankfully it hasn't been a problem for me so far - but I can see it becoming so if a commander and other players magically expect everyone to be an expert from the start.

The very first thing I wanted to know was how I got more weapons, more armor and health. I didn'tknow that it's the responsibility (or pleasure) of the commander to drop this stuff for you. I wanted to know this because I kept on getting slaughtered. In retrospect, I was playing the game all wrong; I was playing it like a deathmatch.

There are some really good beginner's guides out there, especially on this page. They suggest that you hold back, assist in building, and stick with other players as fire support. Again in retrospect, this is exactly what you want to do. Oh, and play as a marine, not as an alien or a commander - those roles just confuse me at this point.

So - on to the important newbie information:

You start with a minimal amount of ammo. The first thing you want to do (unless there's a clear and present danger) is top up with ammo, for both your light machinegun (LMG) and pistol. It's at the ammo station, which you just use and it gives you the ammo for the currently selected weapon. If it doesn't do anything, it's upgrading and you'll have to wait until it's done.
There is a difference between building things and repairing things. Any marine can build, but only a marine equipped and using a welder can repair. When the commander drops new structures, they don't do anything until the marines activate them - they need to go over there and 'use' them until they are functional. The more marines that build, the faster it gets built, but you want to have somebody covering in case the aliens rush in. You hold the use button for best results, not tapping it.
Repairing things requires the welder, which the commander drops, and it replaces your pistol. You "fire" at the structure to be repaired, which you need to be right up against. The welder will also repair armor of other marines.
Using the radio commands is apparently much better than typing or using voice communication. The comms give the commander an alert to jump to with the push of a button. One of the problems I noticed right off as a commander (for the 30 seconds I tried it) was I couldn't locate my marines easily. When an alert goes off, the commander just pushes the space bar and it takes his cursor right to you. So if you need a medpack or more ammo, use the appropriate comm and it makes it easier for him to help you.

After I got these basics out of the way, I then focussed in on why I was dying all the time. I'm no star in CS, but I can usually hold my own - again, I hadn't learned to change my style yet. The odds are, in a one-on-one fight against a skulk and a marine with a LMG, stacked heavily in the alien's favour. This isn't a bad thing, it just means you have to play less like a loner and more like a team player. You go out in groups, covering each other's backs, shoot in controlled bursts rather than spraying.

I love this game...

Good to see that you're learning what it takes to play NS and enjoy it for what it is without being completely clueless. Kudos for reading the manuals and training guides. It definately helps. You've been pretty lucky, as I've been in some games with new people and no one really helped. I was the only one giving advice and it's hard to type out advise in the middle of a fight.

There are also images of maps somewhere posted on these boards. I highly recommend making copies of the maps so you can reference them. That way when someone asks you to defend the Main Generator Room you know where it is and how to get there.

If you need any other help, don't hesitate to ask around here. That's what this section of the boards are for. No question is too stupid when starting out. Just make sure you check around the other threads so that you aren't asking something that has already been discussed several time...although with lots of posts that can be hard to do.

Good luck! Hope to see ya on the front lines...
