Disappearing Seafloor

I have a problem with disappearing seafloor ! First noticed when heading back from an island. The seafloor dropped sharply to below my capability (not upgraded yet) and then I went forward through nothingness, no seafloor came up again and when I got back home it was the same - if there wqas seafloor it was hundreds of meters down even though I was in the shallows.
I have seen it again on a new game trying to head off in a direction, the floor drops down, perhaps normally, but then never comes back, and I have just returned to my base to find it gone and hundreds of meters of sea in its place.
