Entire game world lags if you build too much?

Curious but I recently built a tunnel from one end of shallows to the other and now no matter where I am the game lags tremendously. It doesn't seem to matter if I am near the structure or not and it makes things pretty unplayable. I made a steam post about it that has screens of the construction http://steamcommunity.com/app/264710/discussions/0/412448158155971878/ . I was sure I hadn't built all THAT much compared to screen caps I have seen before and I run a 780ti and i7-4790k cpu with 16gb RAM so computer power probably isn't the issue. Anyone got any ideas?
