As we all know, the ocean in the land of Subnautica is very calm. Almost too calm. If you've ever built a base above water or climbed the ladder on your lifepod, you'll have noticed that the surface of the water doesn't ever move. It's just a calm stretch of water as far as your eyes can see.
So why not shake things up? Storms would add a unique element to Subnautica, and I personally feel they would go a long way in adding that 'survival' feel. Think about it. If you were ever shipwrecked and on a lifepod, wouldn't you feel threatened or scared that you might not make it if you saw a storm coming? Storms of varying intensity could be made to occur as random(?) events.
What would a Storm do? Well, it could move the lifepod, scatter resources around, and anger aggressive life forms. High intensity storms could also damage the base a bit, and knock the player about if not inside a base or a Cyclops. Tornadoes, whirlpools, and other water features could also be added. Why make the seafloor the only dynamic aspect of the game? Why not breathe life into the water itself? Right now, there's a message that's flashed at the player that warns you not to stray too far from your base or vehicle. But it's very much possible to stay away from them for extended periods of time, utilizing brain coral, stillsuits and thermoblades to break the tether. Storms would make the player have to be on their guard at all times.
Storms also add the opportunity for crafting unique survival equipment, ranging from basic weather vanes to midrange monitoring stations or even advanced climate control stations! Different climates could mean different conditions the player needs to account for.
I feel this would really add to the appeal of the game. What do YOU think? Please do leave a comment below!
