We could use genetic engineering and turn the reefback into a bio-submarine that is without metal and high energy drive:
There could be monsters in the deep that eat through metal or seek for metal to eat it.
Down in the deep you might meet monsters that drain your energy, so you need some sub thats immune to energy draining.
The reefback sub is also good for mimics and can bypass an army of seadragons that might ignore reefbacks.
Additional Ideas:
Use mesmer dna and warper dna to build a mind link machine that can link your brain to other fish and control them. Use them to dive into areas that are inaccessable to you. Cut the link before you get eaten.

Solution: Gene-splice some Shocker DNA into your cyborg Reefback, and let the fun begin.
It has an organic hull that can shrink and grow. As such it can travel through smaller tunnels by shrinking and regrow in size after exiting the tunnels.
It can use tentacles to grab things from outside the sub and put it in its own interior through an organic mouthlike hatch. So it can be used as a collector vehicle.
