Three Commander Wins In One Day!

I'm learning! But so are marine players
The first win was a solid victory. The alien team must have been a little inept since the only time we encountered resistance was after we had fought into a hive room. I'm not that good of a commander, and I was surprised at how easy it was.

The second victory we came back from the brink as I due to some good building, knowledgable players, and heavy usage of HA and welders. I had enough to deck out two marine players and they proceeded to wipe the floor with the fades attacking the base, weld eachother up, proceed to retake the hive we just lost, weld up again, secure nozzles, weld up again, etc.... By then I had equipped other marines in the same combo, and even new players were picking up on the concept of welding armor, those that didn't have armor were flocking around the HA giving support. The group just kept moving from area to area. The second hive ended up to be one nasty furball as the entire HA force faced off against almost the entire alien team as fades and one onos. We barely secured the hive (about two guys in light armor left) and I was forced to stop the advance. I seriously don't think we would have won if it wasn't for the great teamwork these marines had.

The third victory I chalk up solely to the marine players. I took command after a inexperienced commander left us in a bad spot (two hives, no upgrades, third hive empty but unsecure). We barely took one hive and fades were already at our base doorstep. We still had phase gates between the hives, and one enterprising marine decided to scout out the enemy hive, only to find it mildly defended. He let me know on voice com, so I hand guided a group of marines to his location. To my surprise, they understood how hivesight worked and didn't fire on anything in the area until we had a turret factory and several turrets up. Soon after a siege was up along with a phase gate. We poured every single marine through that gate and killed the fades along with the second hive (after many losses). After that it was a steady uphill battle to secure enough resources, but we eventually won.

What does this have to do with strategy? Well a while back I posted a big long post about marines not wandering off. I have an addendum, don't wander off, but don't be afraid to scout if there's nothing important to do, just request orders or let your commander know. And if you're commander, take advantage of those scouts that find ways into important areas, as my third example shows. Sure, it's fine not to build where there is only one man, just send another group of marines to back him up, and lead them through every turn to make sure they go the safe route.

Sure the commander has a godlike overhead view of the battlefield, but only marines view the map in detail. They can fill you in on problems and provide nice solutions to what seems like an impossible situation. Let your marines know what your strategy is and they'll be more willing to follow orders and will come up with their own little additions.

Marine players are really learning the tactics and strategy needed to win as marines, and commanders should take advantage of that knowledge when it presents itself.

Right now the marines seem to be winnning more often then the Aliens on my fav server. I anticipated this, but didn't think it would start happening for a week or so.

Basically the marines are learing to use teamwork and tactics, the comm's get more experienced (and stop turtling up the base), while the aliens still think that they will win anyway so why bother...

There will of course be a reaction soon, and Aliens will start using teamwork, co-ordinating gorgs, actually taking advantage of the umbra etc etc etc. Should make the game more interesting
