I first off want to start by saying, I LOVE this game. It has been an incredible experience and I can’t wait for new updates to be added. As the title says I’m a pretty hardcore gamer, I stumbled upon Subnautica and had a blast with it from the very moment I jumped in it. Loved every aspect of it and with all my hours spent in the game, here are my thoughts and ideas that I would like to share with everyone, especially the devs who I think have done an excellent job with this game.
A lot of topics have already been touched on so I won’t get into those (decorations for sea bases, more machinery and tools/upgrades etc.). What I will get into is lore and studies, which I think will greatly increase the overall experience and also give us an inside look at the world the developers have taken so much time to create. After that I will basically get into the core aspects of the game: Survival and Exploration.
Lore/Research:
As it stands, I know little about the story, and the life on this beautiful planet. And to be honest, I want to know more! The player’s character reaches this strange planet and knows nothing about it. I would love to see the Character be able to study the plant life, the fish, and the different biomes of the planet. Instead of giving us a bland description of a Peeper, give us a Character’s thought out log.
Such as, “I recently discovered a fish that swims incredibly fast, making it a task to catch. It seems to be very energetic and lively making chirping noises as it swims, who would have thought that life on this planet could be so vast and strange in nature. I think I’ll call this type of fish, the Peeper.”
It makes for such an interesting immersion technique and immensely fun to read. I would spend so much time just gathering all the data on everything to read these logs and learn more about this strange world. The developers have created such a beautiful game and it would be a shame to not be able to learn more about it all. Perhaps researching the fish further could teach you more about their behavior, their traits and so forth so forth. But being able to research a strange new planet is, I believe, an important addition to the gameplay. We could potentially have a module back at a sea base that could analyze any fish or plants we bring back to it. This game is almost begging for a story to be told about it, while at the same time enabling the player to make his own story and take his own journey through this world.
Survival:
I honestly feel that as a survival game it poses no difficulty. I did not have any problems surviving and the Bone Sharks, Stalkers and Sandsharks proved little challenge. Avoiding them was as easy as dodging charges and hitting them with a Knife and or blowing them away with a Repulsion Cannon. And Crashes can also be blown away by a repulsion cannon. That makes surviving in this game a cake walk because they are currently the most prominent dangers in the sea (aside from the Reaper Leviathans) and thus the survival aspect of the game seems nonexistent. Food, water and Oxygen are a breeze to maintain and handle, and I have little issues with it. I know the devs are currently working on that system to make it more complex so I’ll wait for that, but I would like to say that I hope to see poisonous fish to eat, or eating too much of the same type of fish will food poison the player causing their food level to deplete faster (maybe turning the Green bar purple temporarily?).
That being said, here are my thoughts: I would love to see the night system expanded upon. Currently the HUD message informing you that night is approaching more or less means nothing to survival and it just affects the surrounding area by making it harder to see. If you pull a flashlight out, problem solved (in most areas I can still see fine without a flashlight). I would love to see the danger increase at night. Perhaps different fish come out at night from caves or the depths to scour the surface for more food. Make the night a time where I want to seriously consider heading back to my SeaBase/Lifepod and waiting it out, or at the very least be more alert, more apprehensive. I want to be afraid, I don’t want better weapons to kill dangerous fish. I want to be in a strange world struggling to survive. I should feel like my SeaBase is a safe haven for me, yet not entirely safe. I would love to have to defend my SeaBase from big fish with my Repulsion Cannon or such. Or reinforce my hull and wait it out.
Survival in this game is far too easy, and seeing the difficulty increase exponentially the farther down you go into the sea would be a great addition. In the current state I can go to the deepest parts of the sea with just a few Oxygen tanks and an Air Bladder to surface quickly. In my opinion I would love to see a little progression where to dive deeper to the depths I need more Machinery or more equipment to avoid dangerous encounters with big fish. But not so much where it no longer feels like a free roaming exploration game. Just particularly the dark deep depths 200m+.
If any further feedback is needed, not just ideas and suggestions, please email me or message this account.
P.S. And please for the love of barnacle suckers add respawns for resources over time. Even if it's a week in game I'd rather have that than nothing.
