How to make the flares useful

Personally, I never find myself bothering with flares. If I need light, I've got my trusty flashlight, which I can take with me and use forever so long as I have batteries or the swim charge fins.
However, the flares could have a great addition. They could be used to distract certain creatures, namely Crash. Currently, Crash are almost impossible to evade unless you have a Seaglide. This accessible and alternative solution would be reasonable and cool.
