Please post in: http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/137885/subnautica-map-navigation (Map)
Or: http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/137803/scientific-research-overhaul-proposal (Research)

Two more proposals:
DB: After encountering a species you can sample it, make photos or use some kind of scanner on it which creates a database entry. You might write it yourself or it gets filled automatically, or a mix of both with one species per page, like a research journal. A nice few pictures, maybe even a 3d model to rotate freely and zoom in to see all the nice details and a description including name, general description and behavior and such things for both flora and fauna.
Map: Pretty self explanatory. It's a map. Perhaps you use a specially fitted vehicle with sonar to measure depths and make a chart of known lands. This may vary from height/depth only charts up to include biomes and/or caves and player markers/text to note down important/interesting locations. Of course the player would still need to visit those locations to fill the map in. The player themself may or may not show on the map, or only with a special hud upgrade. And vehicles and beacons may or may not show up as well, perhaps only with a special upgrade as well.

Yes, I have been developing a detailed proposal for the devs going in that same direction, here:

Let me know what you think :)

    Awesome :3
I still like a 3d view to rotate objects and view all details, and add notes by yourself.
So what about the mapping idea? Actually I'll just start a poll...
