Hello everybody, I'm really interested in this game but since I don't use Steam I'd like to know wether or not there's going to be a Steam free release.
Thanks.
I would want to say probably not... as it introduces torrenting if not already, but yea not the main concern... BUT besides that, there are hookups into steam such as the market and rewarding steam players hullplates who have special preorder- (before EA) edition. I have to ask you, what is the reason behind not using steam? It is a trustworthy program that has been around for years and I personally believe is it useful nowadays since CD/DVD copies of games are pretty much non-existent for the most part.. unless its specific exclusives, but as Subnautica is early-access program, it won't be released other than steam for now.
From what I see, Subnautica is already torrented out the wazoo. The primary advantage of Steam is to expose Subnautica to many gamers at a relatively low price. Based on UWE's history, I can't see them doing this any time soon, if ever.

The reasons are simple: I don't agree with Valve's policies, I don't want unneeded software running on my PC and I don't like what Steam's services are.
I remember when there was no Steam and DD and honestly those weren't bad times at all.
And, sadly, yes, because of Steam I can't play games and support developers that deserve it anymore, I'm not debating Steam as resource for developers but for gamers like me it's the apocalypse.
However I 'm not here to moan or troll or flame, I know this is a delicate subject.
I saw the game, found it interesting, which doesn't happen very often nowadays, seen the inevitable Steam logo in the home page and just wondered if all gamers could be able to support and play it.
Nevermind.

A lot of games and studio's wouldn't even exist today to publish their games. Steam (and others) give potential access to a huge audience, which simply isn't accessible without Steam. And the services on Steam/Desura/Origin/IoS Store/Google Play and the console markets etc..., easy encapsulation (protection) of your game, workshop/achievements/store, Steam simply stands out on top in terms of support and potential audience.
Also the only protection against piracy is to provide a better service and that's basically what it does
So while I can definitely understand your concerns with mandatory software to run your games. And seeing you also understand the huge benefits for the developers (especially the small/startup indies). I see the benefits for gamers (larger market/more games/innovation) and developers (support), far outweigh the arguable downsides to it... Think of the indies man, think of the indies :P Heck we even have 1 man startup indie studios. That stuff wouldn't even be possible without this stuff...
