Not sure what to do next

So I probably haven't explored the game as much as some. Looking at the biomes on the wiki, there are some areas I had not come across. But now that I just built my cyclops, what is it that I should be doing? My impression is that the main objective is to get off the planet, but as interesting as visiting those locations I haven't been to yet might be, I'm not sure how that is supposed to help me attain my goal. I really have no need to scrounge up any more resources. I suppose I could toy around with the underwater bases, but again, why? I see no reason to build a base right now unless it helps me accomplish something or makes another task easier. For example, if we inevitably had to build a launch platform for the ship to take off again, building has a purpose. If we could build a station over a geothermal vent to auto-charge power cells or the Aurora's engines, again, purpose.

Has my "next step" just not been addressed yet because the game is early access or is there a key piece of info I'm missing?

Your job was to make the planet habitable. Aka you were initially sent in to terraform the landscape and make it suitable for the colonists who were coming after.

However considering the Aurora crashed and you seem to be the sole survivor, I think it's safe to assume that is no longer your primary goal. I think survival is more important than rescue, but signalling for rescue and eventually getting rescued should in some way be the point.

The problem I see with getting rescued is... what then? This game currently has about as much story line as minecraft, there is no real end game, sure you can go kill the ender dragon and get the credits but then the game just continues. So what would this game involve? Currently the story aspect is... pretty loose.

I think getting rescued would have other implications, such as discovering the source of the energy pulse that crashed the Aurora. If you didn't do that before signalling for rescue, then the rescue ship could crash and you'd pick up new communique from fleet command saying they intend to glass the planet, aka bombard the whole thing from space. This would add a whole new aspect to the survival as you have to frantically rush around and try to contact them and tell them to stand down as you're alive on the planet still. Or as you frantically run for the nearest deep cave and pray you can ride out the bombardment.
