There are a LOT of strange inventory bugs that it's impossible to give you picture proof without having to resort to steam screenshots or printscreens, here is one, the inventory layout when I picked up this small storage cube got all messed up.

Yeah, my inventory was too full to pick it up so I stored, believe my knife to make room as well as maybe a salt or something that took up 1 slot went and picked it up, when I went to drop the storage was when this was found.

Got a new one for ya, swapping items out to build the cyclops I ran into THIS with a storage cube, it has a knife in it and when i put the seaglide in it stacks on top of whatever 2x2 item inside.

Here is another case of 'full inventory', something is ghosting up the inventory slots even though there are visible slots.

This should be fixed since CS #13220 - now you'll see 'Inventory Full' message instead of getting messed up inventory, and you'll be able to pick up another item of size 2*2 even in this case:
