Saving gear on lifepod entry?

As a simple work around until proper saving is in, could the game just save my gear every time I enter the lifepod? I understand that saving the whole world state is difficult especially since the world is changing, but I'd be happy to just preserve my inventory from session to session. The lifepod would become like the bonfires in dark souls.
