My opinion is that, from the marines point of view, the GL can take down life forms pretty quickly. From the aliens point of view you have to flank them and prevent them from retaliating (assuming that the situation allows it).
Im just saying that when you compare the costs of shotty vs GL, the latter can be much more devastating.
