I appreciate what you guys are saying, but please don't act like it's not any work to implement it. While we do have a team now with the CDT, it will still take time from someone. Time that could be spent on bug fixes / new features.
We'd have to first get approval from the CDT leads, then they'd have to get approval from UWE, then we'd have to find a programmer to make it happen. It would be a whole mess of work - we can't just use the same minimap the marines have, it wouldn't fit in with the UI. It wouldn't just be a snap of the fingers to have it in. I honestly don't know that it's something that would be considered
That said, if somebody came up with a working, good looking mod that does all that, the process would be greatly speed up.

:-?? Find some ns2 modders who are not cdt devs or working at combat :P

Heh, sorry. I was responding to the people who were referring specifically to it not being a good set up at all. It didnt seem like it would be a lot of work, but I stand corrected.
what we need was the old alien vision from NS1 where the aliens could see lifeforms/hive/rts through the wall, along with health status and if its being under attacked

Personally, I found the NS1 Hive Mind interface better. The only reason to pop up the minimap was to orient yourself on new maps - you never needed to have it open to see the strategic or tactical situation, because anything visible on the minimap was also marked up on the HUD with various kinds of blips.
I dislike having to run around with a big fat Maximap up just so I can figure out where the action is.
@matso or @SamusDroid
Not only that but why isn't there an option for a ROTATING map after all this time? Please.
Surely i'm not the only one who would like that?
Also, a mod to allow a player to set a WAYPOINT for himself on the map, visible on the HUD.
You can choose a spawnpoint, such a mechanism could work for setting your own waypoint.
Both of those would help immensely to quickly find your bearings, and be completely optional.

I've said it before, I cant understand how a rotating map would be helpful. You're the brightly colored triangle. You turn left, your triangle turns left. Very, very simple IMO.
Imagine the comm blurts out of frustration and in a hurry "I need people on the right side of the map," (something I've heard hundreds of times) and then you turn right, and suddenly your right side is the commanders up or down or left. For the sake of a keeping a team-based game more organized, I think having even the option for a rotating map would be detrimental for the rest of the team if even just 2 players had it enabled. Sort of like not having all the team on the same page.
Plus, I, and I'm sure a lot of other players constantly press C when not in combat to see what's going on elsewhere. I'd puke if my mini map was constantly rotating/moving with me, not to mention the visual vomit I imagine I'd be seeing as the map spins and spins each time I round a corner.
Zeep makes a point about being able to make your own waypoints.
This might help lower the adjustment period to new maps (importent if people ever get tired of summit/tram/veil rotation) since people could click where they want yo go on their map, then follow the waypoint markers without having to keep the face-blocking map up.

This actually sounds like a good low-cost compromise for the whole problem!
it should be an option. Minimap HUD for new players to learn the map. then once you know it you can just rely on the map popup.
I often am running around with the giant map overlay trying to navigate the map.
A mini map for Kharaa like the marine mini map is less useful as it just doesn't show enough of a room. With alien mobility, the larger mini map is more useful (default key "c").
that's like your opinion man. So an option minimap would satisfy everyone.

I'm already satisfied. Don't pretend that this is some huge controversial issue. Most people are completely apathetic to this suggestion. It's not a question about having everyone satisfied - it's about using the time we're given most efficiently to battle the important issues.
NS2 is a game that is designed to be easily modded - you should give it a try if you really want this feature. If you do a good job, then it could be implemented at some point in some fashion.
I made a compass for aliens. Just an idea and an excuse to get my hands dirty. It doesn't work on most servers, but you can see it on a local server as a proof of concept. I found the North bearing compass a bit disorienting when switching focus to the map, so I added a second option to instead display the player's orientation with reference to the map. The alternate mode might be more informative with a compass rose, but that's for another day.
