I like improving myself (since that is fun for me), but the reason I don't play competitive is specifically because I play for fun, not prestige or money (I assume prestige and money is the point of comp play)
Fame? Money? In comp NS2? Ok, what did I do wrong so far?
Once you've improved to a skill lvl way beyond the average pub players you have to decide if it's fun for you to use that skill and stomp pub players and getting high KDs or to look for a challange and play vs good competitive teams. I decided for the second one, because it's the only way to have fun games for me.
But as I have heard in this thread, comp play is not about having fun, so, yeah.
There are two kinds of fun. Nobody would play this game if they didn't have fun.

Exactly what I was thinking. Can someone explain to me the 2 different kinds of "fun" here?

I am no comp player but i would guess:
Having fun playing and trying to win vs Having fun playing and trying to win as a team
Someone could probably write paper on the kinds of fun one can have while gaming. In ns2 its all about game conditions and games goal. In pub play there are different player counts. Most pub players like between 8v8 up to 20v20+. 8v8, 12v12, 16v16, 20v10 all play different and different kinds of people enjoy them. So you could say there are 4 kinds of fun right there based on player count and perceived amount of chaos/speed of game. There are so many different life forms and weapons one can have in ns2 one could say that each one has its own kind of fun. 5 flavors of alien fun, and at least 7 flavors of marine fun. There is even just the two kinds of fun alien vs marine fun. It is all so subjective you could break it down into hundreds on each individuals little nitpicks of preference. In pub play the fun comes from the means to the end less than the end itself.
In ns2 the goal is to win, but how do we get there? It is also ok to lose in a pub, individual preference depending; this is more so than a comp game everyone must agree. In pubs don't really think about the means to the ends, maybe some do. In comp play its all about the ends not the means. The means are important as they are required to win.It requires a taste for playing well, and the most quality of play. This means there is less room for error in a game. Winning is the supreme goal not fun.
Lets look at an alien early game skulk rush. In pub this is done to win but isn't much fun on its own. You lose out on most of the game. If it is done repeatedly this is just trolls being trolls.
In a comp game, an early skulk rush may be a cheap tactic, but is effective. It doesn't matter that it was cheap and you lost out on a lot of the game. You won that is that. You take your first place title and smile.
I am not a comp player, and my writing reads a little rambly to me and I have no intentions of editing. Just a disclaimer.
1. Are you really good in pub games?
if yes, see step #2
if no, continue pubbing
2. Do you enjoy pub stomping?
if yes, continue pubbing
if no, see step #3
3. Do you want to play against competent opponents and better yourself?
if yes, join a few pugs and continue to step #4.
if no, uninstall ns2
4. Do you enjoy the aspect of 6v6 and want to take it to the next level?
if yes, pug more and get on a team... aka welcome to comp ns2
if no, keep pugging for funzies.
tl;dr Comp NS2 "IS" fun or we wouldn't do it. Like Anze said, pubbing got to a boring point and this is the next logical step to keep our interest in the game.
I would imagine in pugs that people are more touchy when you don't play right/making mistakes, but I could be wrong.
I think a better idea would be a server that is primarilly dominated by a skillfull comunity, but has open access. For example, when I play CvG TTT servers in Gmod, it has a good number of relatively skilled players from CvG along with relatively skilled players that tend to play on it. That way, it's still open but has skilled players playing.
I could be wrong, but, it seems pugs became more popular after 250 as I saw less and less skilled players in pubs some time after that (or maybe I was just getting better, =P)
Just get on pugs/gathers already. explain that it's your first time in a gather, and no one will mind. We're always keen to have more people testing the waters of comp gaming. If you want to improve beyond pub hero level, there is no better way.
I have the most fun in ns2 when playing a comp game with my teammates, we're working together but joking and laughing with each other too.
I would add that while gathers aren't perfect (sometimes the teams ARE 'stacked' due to captains not knowing the skills of all the players), they are largely more balanced than pubs, and typically far more fun for people who enjoy playing as a team, even if you're on the losing side.
Don't make assumptions about comp gaming in ns2. I have merced for several different clans, and they all have different atmospheres. I love playing with gorge busters because we're mates who get along well, & don't blame or beetch at each other. I can trust my teammates to make the right calls and plays, to shoot the skulk off my feet and to check their corners, and I can learn off them to improve my own game, too.
The feel of other clans can be quite different, but no less enjoyable for it. The goal is to win, but almost every comp player I have met has a lot of fun along the way, win or lose.
Maybe one day you too can be one of pascow's div3 carry mercs.
The reason I got the assumption that comp games have players that are touchy when losing is because I have noticed/experienced it a lot when playing ranked matches in SC2 and a few other games.
But if what you say is true, I will look into it the moment Dell finally decides to ship my GTX 860m (they seem a bit shaky with deadlines)
Surprisingly, getting the card directly from dell was half the price than ebay, even though my warranty finished a long time ago.

I would imagine pugs are closed access correct?

It would be interesting to see 20v10 game lol (pubbers one side, comp team other side)
