What can we do about Online Security?

So it seems it is not just Microsoft that end up with massive vulnerabilities in code, as evidenced by the recent discoveries in Linux and iOS based code. http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/03/critical-crypto-bug-leaves-linux-hundreds-of-apps-open-to-eavesdropping/

This leads me to question security, in computing in general, and our trust in it. In the modern age we do everything online, and with software becoming more and more complicated, we are undoubtedly going to see more of this type of thing happening across every OS. The big question is how can we, as users, best defend ourselves against possible security problems in our OS's, apart from never putting the computer online. As a very experienced PC user, I avoid all the common ways to compromise my security, but holes and flaws in code are beyond protection of the user in general.

With the recent vulnerabilities discovered and exploited in SOHO routers as well, https://www.team-cymru.com/ReadingRoom/Whitepapers/2013/TeamCymruSOHOPharming.pdf Should we really be trusting the internet? What can we do to protect ourselves online, or do we just give up and go, have all my data anyway?
