Vanilla game crashes halfway through human tutorial, Xubuntu 13.10

Right when I get the shotgun, and shoot whatever the thing that has wings is (I'm sorry, I'm brand spankin new to this stuff), the game immediately dies on me.

I've got an AMD FX 8 core, a GTX 670, and 32GB RAM. running Xubuntu 13.10, which I reinstalled yesterday. I've attached a full dump of my system information if any other details are necessary.

The crash is known and should hopefully be fixed in build 263. There is a thread around here about it.

That's odd. This says it dies upon the first shot. I can shoot for a while, in the tutorial, I can get past the first few monsters, then when you buy the shotgun, and fire at that thing that looks like a bat, then it crashes.

Ahh, in that case I would guess you are running into the 32bit memory limit. Turn the texture quality down, and the number of decals and it should go good after that. It still might crash but it should put it off for a a few hours.

That crash should also be fixed in 263.

Okay, this is weird. I just tried all those fixes. I dropped textures down to low, and decals barely stick around. It still dies the second I fire the shotgun at the bat. That specific thing is causing the crash.

Well the good news is that the 263 beta should probably solve that issue as well. Can you update to the beta and let us know.

if not can you run it with gdb and see if you can get a back trace we can send on to the devs:

This may sound dumb, but how, exactly do I update to the beta? I've had Steam for a bit now, but I'm still a bit new to the interface for bleeding edge stuff on it, specifically.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, googled how like I should've to begin with. Will update if this fixes the game!
