I have a reasonably older system, i5-760 (2.8 GHz Quad Core), ATI 5770, and 8GB of ram. For a long time, I had no issues playing NS2, but over the last few months, I was dropping to less than 20 FPS in combat or in hive locations.

At the point of buying a new computer, I decided to overclock my processor. In the midst of doing so I discovered that my issues were related to my CPU's powersaving.

Using CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z/versions-history.html), I found routinely my CPU was running a 1.4-1.6GHz. Disabling C1/C3 power saving resolved the matter and I went from 14-20 FPS to 90-120.

I know it won't fix all, or most of the issues with performance, but for some people who have machines that seem to be powerful enough to play NS2, it might be something to check.
