Nothing Works - No Servers, Games Don't Load - Solved

I am a returning player to NS2, with the same computer without any hardware modifications.

I've tried it all, even reformatted and reinstalled my computer to avoid any old fragments or applications that might interfere, and still nothing. This computer has successfully run NS2 in the past so I know the hardware is compatible, and I am generally monogamous with my software so they don't differ much either.

Every time I load up NS2, I find no servers are available, and if I am attempt to host a local server or optimize it never fully loads, despite that in the console it says "map'whatever' loaded"

I imagine the reason I cannot see any servers in the listing and my own inability to join any form of game is linked but at this point my ideas are exhausted.

    Error: Couldn't connect to Steam
You are not somehow connected to steam server. Maybe firewall or steam just being silly. If later, just wait or try changing steam server.

Are you gaming wirelessly or wired?

Its wireless but connectivity hasn't been an issue in the past with this modem. How can I go about fixing the steam issue?

Also the issue isn't purely steam related I do not think, as I cannot host a local server OR run the optimization. Every time the same issue.

NS2 requires steam connection to run optimization or to create local server. Anyone can reproduce your issue by running steam offline mode.

If that is true then at least we have narrowed down the issue. I tried some of the fixes I found online, such as lowering latency from automatic to 500, but so far no results.

Go Steam settings > Ingame Tab > Play around with the "Server max. ping per minute". I set it to 250 and it helped a lot with any server list problems. Also in NS2 serverlist, sort the table a few times by any criteria. If then servers show up with "?", right-click on it a few times until the playerlist loads.

It seems I stumbled on the culprit completely by accident. Frustrated that I cannot play NS2 I installed 2 other games on steam, only to get the infamous "Failed To Start Game - Unknown Error"

It would seem something about my steam installation got corrupted at some point and it was by chance that the already installed games were not affected however anything new, including NS2 was suffering the effects.

Unfortunately it took a reformat in order to eliminate the error, something somewhere lingered even after uninstalling and reinstalling steam.

I would just like to thank everyone who posted and helped me try and figure this issue out.
