Some of this is good, but I disagree with some points:
"Take the closest exit. Find marine start" - Should be "check your map and get an even split out of base" you'll know where the marine start is based on the first engagement without hunting for it, and you don't want all your skulks going in one direction (usually).
"Very effective early game : bite > bite > instant para(site)." - Should be "parasite > bite > bite. Parasite is difficult to land, especially once combat has started. Close the distance and parasite just before you're initial bite and they'll die just as quickly but won't necessarily be dodging around whilst your trying to land a hit. Also, if this is directed at rookies, why not mention what parasite actually does (mark on map).
"get out asap if you hear shotguns" - should be "Shotguns are deadly at close range. Use caution if you hear them". First, you're making a blanket rule (which you contradict later in the video) and secondly you've not told them why to run at the sound of shotguns.
"support teammates even if your energy is low" - I'm not risking a fade or lerk to rescue a skulk any day unless i'm very confident I'll live, and neither should rookies. both those lifeforms are sitting ducks without energy.
There's some things that weren't in there that should have been imo, especially as a tips & tricks video.
-Wall-jumping to build momentum
-Hotkey for Health/Ammo
-Hotkey for nutrient mist (whilst embryo)
marine positioning & movement (keep some distance between you and teammates, engage at range where possible & taking wide arcs around corners)
-Fade movement (tap blink, jump, jump)
-emphasis on teamwork (no rambos)
-"above all, listen to the commander (and why)". you mention this briefly at about the 2 min mark without any real reasoning behind it. I personally think it should come at the end of the video with a brief explanation of his/her role.
-Individual weapons/lifeforms excel at certain things. some details would be nice. Why should I grab a Flame-thrower? what does it do? (removes alien structure abilities such as healing, stalls research, saps energy, destroys bilebomb & enzyme) and how should I play with it?
-Burst fire, don't spray & pray
-Communication is a huge part of a successful team. what sort of thing should we be telling our team / listening for
-Mines!
It's refreshing to see something a bit different from the tutorials/guides already out there. With a bit more fleshing out, it could be a very beneficial video series.
Hi Chizzler, thanks for your critique! You're right on a lot of points. This vid is aimed toward casual players as opposed to entirely new ones. The former are the type that I had in mind since I couldn't fit in information about everything that's going on. The tips that I included were made to fit the situations as they appear in my play-through. They're supposed to explain the reasoning (although perhaps ambiguously) behind the actions that I took, for better or for worse. I wanted to help viewers decide what would have been the best course of action in each scene, and then they hopefully compare that to their own actions in recent situations.
Some of the tips can be argued about their inclusion, such as the "listen to your comm" tip. In that clip, I was a bit too focused on killing marines and after that tip appears, it shows me heading toward Atrium. Of course you should listen to your comm at all times anyway, but this tip was supposed to serve as a reminder when I (and players in similar situations) start to get tunnel vision. I guess you could call some of the tips a brief form of "stream of consciousness" where you can read what's going on in my head.
About the "support teammates even if your energy is low" tip, there was both a skulk and a lerk going to engage those marines as I was leaving. Again, some of these tips are situation-specific and there happened to be a phase gate that needed to go down in reactor core. There was no real issue in that scene to deter me from reinforcing the skulk + lerk even if I had low energy. All I had to do was tap blink less and spam jump more, saving energy for walker-fade swipes. A whole different story if those marines had shotguns.
Thanks again. You've made me realize what I was doing with some of those tips and I didn't realize it until after the fact. I'll be sure to re-label it as a casual player vid.
I like the video a lot, the only thing I found really misleading (although I agree with chizzler's points) was the part about supporting your teammates if your energy is low. If my energy is low I'm getting out of there, I'm not about to risk a fade for a couple of free skulks
