Just a quick "me too". Bought Natural Selection 2 last week but haven't been able to play it yet. Grr. Arch 64-bit, kernel 3.12.

I also tried NS2 on Fedora 20 64-bit, and it has the exact same problem
    mmap() failed: Cannot allocate memory

Could be it, My ubuntu box is running 3.11.14.

Looks like the 3.12 release notes have a lot of features related to video performance etc so it might be a worthy avenue to check up on.

Perhaps you guys should revert to what he's using ^

I've had the same problem for quite a long time now, ArchLinux 64bit as well.
    Kernel 3.12.6-1-ck.

I have the same problem when running Kernel 3.12.2 or newer.
3.12.1- works fine. (Still with the odd crash though)

Which is a pain, as I would like to keep my kernel up to date.

    Running Arch 64bit

I am having this issue too with Fedora 19, kernel 3.12.5 (64 bits).

Same issue on a fully updated Archlinux. Glad to see it's a kernel issue, should definitely get some priority.

I'd also love a 64-bit build as I have 16GB of RAM and a 780 ti... kind of a shame that maxed out textures are too much for me.

Well i want to thank the developers for making me able to study allot more without having this game to distract me.

    eh........

[Arch Linux + Nvidia 660 Ti]
    sudo pacman -S linux-lts
    sudo pacman -S nvidia-lts
    sudo cp /boot/grub/grub.cfg /boot/grub/grub.cfg.bak
    sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    reboot

Select linux-lts (was new default for me) at boot when you want to play NS2.

That might work temporarily, but only supporting old kernels is still a major issue. Even LTS aren't going to be under 3.12 forever, and it's pretty annoying to have to use an outdated kernel just to play a game.

I guess I'm hoping that by the time LTS moves up, most other major distros will as well, and the game will basically just not work on Linux, prompting action. Even if it takes a bit longer, you can always just not upgrade linux-lts.

In any case, I'm not sure the game is going to be playable for me now, anyway. With the new card, crash to desktop issues are even worse than before, and now I'm seeing weird black boxes during gameplay that cover up large portions of the screen.

@null_pointer_exception, the black boxes means that you have invalid shaders for certain effects. you should be able to force them to recompile by deleting, ~/.config/Natural Selection 2/cache/ at next load the game will rebuild them.

I'd like to chime in at this point and say, I have been holding back my kernel upgrade since 3.12.2 just because of NS2. Today I could do so no longer, because although the need to play NS2 is strong, other things have presedence at the moment.

First report of this was in December, this issue should've been resolved already.
Is this a Steam issue or NS2 issue? Who should we be sending our bug reports to? If it is a Steam issue, we'll probably have to wait for the next Ubuntu LTS release to catch up. :D

I don't understand why so many opt for 32-bit native Linux when you consider the long and successful history of 64-bit Linux. I can't even remember the last time I ran a 32-bit system, even less when I last owned 32-bit PC hardware. While it is annoying my 64-bit system with 16G cannot be used properly, it's not a show stopper. This crash is, however, because I'm likely not going to downgrade the kernel.

So... Kill zombies instead? Bleh! :)

Egads!? This problem hasn't been solved yet? I've had NS2 sitting on my ARCH machine for awhile now, it's getting lonely :P

So, the issue was narrowed down to 3.12 the week before Christmas. While I know that this has been a month. UWE was closed over the holiday because, well, the devs are people too.

The fix ought to be in 263. Soon (tm)

Sorry, I know I keep saying that:)

Stopping by to mention that I can reproduce this issue on 64-bit Arch with kernel 3.2.8. I've had quite a lot of trouble with NS2 on Arch Linux (I only recently sorted out my sound problems). I feel like the game is in dire need of some attention on Linux. Even though Arch is living on the bleeding edge, none of my other games are this bad, and I would love to actually be able to play the game for once. These problems are likely to be passed along to mainstream users soon enough anyway.

Any updates on this? I haven't been able to play this game since I bought it, what, a month ago?

    To quote max:

There are some Linux support fixes including out of memory on kernel 3.12, support for Mesa and a workaround for AMD drivers.

This should be out in 263. Not sure what the release date is yet. There are concerns about nearness to ns2wc.

    that'd be awesome!

are we speaking weeks or days?

The release date for the monthly patch is normally around the end of the month (read now), however, with the NS2WC coming up, there is debate about whether the patch should be delayed until after the NS2WC has finished. The NS2WC is scheduled for 22nd Feb.

Hugh has previously announced that they are considering a steam Beta release so people can test and try out the update, without it affecting the NS2WC, however, I believe final decisions are still to be made.

that Beta release would be nice.
  • Vash63Vash63 Join Date: 2012-11-07 Member: 168045Members
Yeah, I think a beta should be available, especially for an issue as critical as this. I'm not going to downgrade my kernel... I run btrfs and there are other benefits of the newer kernels that I'm not going to give up just to play this. Even if the beta is buggier than full releases, that's still better than not being able to play at all.

It is still broken. I can't understand where is a problem in releasing critical update sooner than in normal schedule?
I believe most updated distros are running 3.11 kernel, even 12.04 LTS now.
I bought this game, but sadly, I was not able to play it yet - even my hw specs are better than recommended :-(

I can help with testing any time you need.
