Game locking up during online play

It doesn't matter how long i play for but sometimes it happens much more often than others. The sound will start looping and my screen will freeze up, if i'm in a menu i can still move the cursor around but can't interact with any of the menu options. After about 5 minutes of my screen being locked up and looping sounds it will unfreeze and then soon after it will probably happen again!

running direct x9(11 is a bit buggy for me with this game), all other setting on high and texture streaming on.
AMD Phenom II cpu
Radeon HD 6870 GPU
Catalyst Version 3.6
Win7-64bit

The game runs smoothly until this mess happens...

    is there anything in your log at %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/log.txt?

    Do you get a tech support popup?

    Are there any actions that appear to cause it or is it completely random?
