Admittedly this is a pretty reaching idea, but I thought I would share. Dun Dun Dun!
Ns2 has a decently active modding base. People like @SamusDroid fixing little things like this here and fsfods luajit implementation that was a big boost. What if UWE encouraged this?
Google, and other companies, are paying cash to people who find exploits in their products. What if a small indie game company did something similar? Obviously for far lesser cash sums than google pays. If someone makes a fix, a QOL feature, or performance improvement they could be paid at UWE's discretion. The amount would decided on how much impact of the submitted code had. Something like fsfods lua jit implementation was pretty big and would be rewarded as such. LIttler things like SamusDroid's fixes would rewarded also.
I could imagine UWE budgeting aside 25% of what they would pay a developer a year for reward money available. It is just an idea for cheap development. It would promote modding and fixes, maybe even bringing in more skilled modders. It would further UWE's open philosophy. UWE could probably get a bunch of free advertisement from the blogonewsosphere.
This is a bit of a reach in an idea. It would need to be fleshed out if actually put into use. What do you think?

Also, it lets the players prioritize what gets fixed and could rapidly lead to an immense amount of polish for the game. SamusDriod's mod is an excellent expample
I know little about squad 5. By what I do know, I say why not do both?
My idea there as I admitted is a reach but I think it has enough merit for me to call attention to it hence this post.
I'm not talking about mechanical changes but if we crowd funded for things like the development of maps, improved league/ladder/gather websites (and APIs for other sites to hook into), skin packs, mods etc, the result would be stuff that UWE is more likely to consider making official. This might even take a little heat off their content production and allow more time for bug fixing.
We have some really gifted people in this community and paying them to do stuff full time for a set period would be a sure way of getting good quality content and at a much faster pace than if they agreed to do it unpaid in their spare time.
