That looks so sweet! How big is it compared to a player model?

Looks way better now that the textures don't appear to have been just slapped on... That yellow looks a bit too bright though.

Looks great, Cliff! Again, I love the dirt and grime on there... it looks so realistic.

You did take the green stipes off the most troublesome spots, which I'm glad to see. And it definiately looks less "glued together" then before.

I would still rather see less green on there, but if you leave it I think it will be fine. And about the yellow... I think it's great bright like that.

Awesome.

Looks really nice. The only parts I don't like (and I know other people have mentioned this too) are the cylinders on the wings. They just don't look like they belong, whether the ship is VTOL or not.

Other then that, great texturing and modeling work!

i like them, it adds the improbable sci-fi supertech mood to it.
remember, they said that the kittyhawk would never fly

Thanks everyone for the feedback i will talk to badmofo about probably changes to the model.
I should probably mention that these screenies is simple smoothshaded views from inside the editor so hopefully will it look better ingame.
I included some closer views here for your viewing plesure.
Have to sleep now have to get up early to work at the lumber factory.
The skin will probably change some more later.

Looking really good, I love the dirt and grime on it.
About the engine problem flayra was talking about, couldnt you continue the yellow strip that runs down the wing, making it wrap around the engine, it might help tie it in.

Looks good! Although, I'd be terrified to fly in something that rusty. <This comment brought to you by the anti-"Nothing looks good unless it's covered in grime" association">

Though you must admit Relic, that a bit (or a lot) of dirt on things can really make them look a bit more realistic or believeable. I'd definately say that this version looks better then the previous clean version, primarily due to the dirt.

But I see where you're coming from. As in... I saw your white hallway in bast.

wow - that looks awesome. I have some qaulms with it but over-all it's good. I'll model wheels for the landing gear and give them to cliff later on. there is some other parts of the skin I have issues with like the nose and the vents under the air intake. But mostly - it looks good

as for flayra - if it's a deal breaker i'll change the VTOL...but otherwise...i'm keeping it.

I didn't vandalize his car I was making it more realistic!

erm, posts like this are one of my personal hates, you just say "but still, you know" without giving any constructive criticism (might just be me and my mood after returning from a family Easter holiday, just shows me how much i dont really like my family)

Sorry Ken that wasn't aimed at you just at the comment which I thought was just to general that it was funny.
There should be a reason for detailing on everything, I dont think you can just add dirt to somthing make it look good(and i also realize this is probably not what you were saying) but the "ware" on something should reflect the enviroment it exists in.
Cliff I really like the model but parhaps you could make the colours more vibrant? - I find skins tend to look a lot more washed out in game than they do in the editor - perhaps a more orange yellow. Also I think you should make the metal texture brighter - get rid of the rust - add some sand coloured dust that has seatled on the craft and some grease coming from inteligent places like rotating joints(landing gear etc).

Next time you're at an airport, take a look at the airplanes. Very little dirt there, except for, as Mu_ said, some grease around landing gear joints, etc.. Even in Star Wars, the ships were pretty clean. People have a tendency (especially 3d artists) to mistakenly believe that everything is 'dirty' in real life, and that adding grunge to everything makes the model/scene look more "realistic". Sometimes what people mistake for grime is just a higher level of detail. This is not to say that dirt never makes a scene better. Often it is appropriate, but not always.

If you study any books on photo-realistic airbrushing, you'll quickly learn that the key element in making a painting believably realistic is the specular details (light highlights, sheens, etc.). This is also what makes images created with even an old (but outstanding) raytracer like Real3D look so much more "realistic" than images created in 3DS Max (without plug-ins). Before raytracing and radiosity lighting were available as plug-ins for Max, the common complaint was that everything made in Max looked like it was made of paper. This was because Max was unable to do proper specular effects, refraction, and light recursions.

I only bring up this 3DS Max example because I just happened to see an article on the relatively new raytracing plugin for Max that shows a rendered wineglass added to a photographic image of a kitchen counter. I found it amusing, since Real3D (admittedly a much less known 3D program) has been able to do this for around 6 years now.

I was aiming to make it look worn and torn like it travels often thru space thru space debri and other stuff that not any ordinary air plane haves to fly thru.
Wath do you mean exactly badmofo about the skin mail me.
But i belive wheels will not fit really well on an space craft look at the droopship in aliens.
O bye the way i will post some better shoots later as i noticed last night after i posted these that i had forgotten to weld together the verticis before i made the screenies thats why the shadows and modell loook a little bit strange.

damn it was nice, but i don't like does barrel shaped thingys on the wings, looks lite wierd
but the rest is just perfect, and i like the rust and dirty look, its makes it more cool in my oppinion

Sorry for dragging this off-topic, Cliff...

Mu and Relic:

I probably should have made myself a bit more clear. I do totally agree that slapping dirt on something isn't going to work in every case. A great example of a realistic looking yet clean surface is the walls in the first level of Halo. I don't remember a speck of dirt one them, yet they are the most realistic looking and believable walls I've ever seen in a game. Like you said, it's the glare, and light refraction/reflections on the surfaces that does it. If you haven't played it, trust me those things are utterly gorgeous when you walk past them.

But my opinion still stands that it does help in very many instances. Even if the concept is a bit unrealistic. People aren't going to stand there looking at a cargo ship in NS thinking "Hmm... I wouldn't think the atmosphere that this thing moves through would be that hard on it... What gives?"

You get my point... I'm not disagreeing with your statements.. But I feel it's a very nice technique to use in a lot of situations.
