I'm getting this error message when I try to join several different servers.

generally, this mean that there is a version conflict between a mod you have installed and a mod installed on the server you are joining.

I suggest removing the workshop folder on your machine and reconnecting.

    windows: %appdata%/Natural Seletion 2/workshop
    linux: ~/.config/Natural Selection 2/workshop

Yeah I tried that, didn't work.

Seems like it was a temporary problem with Shine Admin. Judging from their workshop page it had updated <10 minutes before I started having difficulty.

Then it's the server running an outdated version, bad design right there.

Youll probably find it's already fixed itself, but in either case your workshop folder is in C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Natural Selection 2.

Possibly, but I'd argue an even worse design would be one that involved the game shutting right the hell down the instant a mod was updated so it could always be up to date.
