This is a question is more for the officials. Though I know small games seem rough on marines. I also hear that the leauges do 6v6. Our current server hosts 8v8 and I was wondering how well does it scale? In any case I think the map size can be a limiting factor.
In pubs I feel that 8v8 or 9v9 is the sweet spot, more and it feels like a meatgrinder game more than a strategy one. But when I play with more organised and skillful players usually 6v6 or 7v7 works the best.
I feel that marines benefit more on large player servers than aliens since its a lot harder for aliens to harass which is pretty core for the alien playstyle I think. But that is just my opinion man
Perhaps a good way to scale this game would be that the cost of things regarding all res costs in addition to health/damage dealt/taken goes up or down depending on how many players are on the server.
I'm sure there are a few ways to add scalability to the game.
12v12 is probably the limit on strategic gameplay but it depends on the servers you play on and regulars you play with. 16v16 (which have mostly disappeared) are similar to Metro 64 player in BF3. You aren't looking for teamwork, just huge and crazy slugfests. Game doesn't scale in terms of design well though since certain aspects of gameplay such as gorge abuse and mass marine pushes become really strong.
20 player is probably the cushty amount for the average player.
I do like the divide between low and high count servers. You have the option of in-depth and tight strategic gameplay at 6-8 and possibly 10v or just kicking back and killing shit in the 24 player servers.
