Battles seem reasonably even to me under the current patch. There's a few cheap tricks here and there: Marines + jetpacks + infinite medkits sitting on hive = dead hive. Siege turrets make assaulting alien hives a little too easy and being stealth used few walls.
It's basically like this:
If your a Marine you have to have a good commander and use good teamwork. You have to be able to hold down enough resources to get the equipment you need to topple the aliens. You need to work as a team and cover eachother's backs, because your much more blind than the aliens are. If you can't hold down some resources, your toast. If your commander sucks, eject him or die, if it's not already too late.
If your an Alien you need to constantly be on the offence and to dislodge the Marine's resources. You have a much slower rate of resource gain than the marines because it's spread all across your team. This gives the marine a terrible advantage if you allow them to hold more than one or two resource noozles. If the marines build up too enough resources they'll soon have equipment that will quash you.

The reason why marines lose alot , is because they either:
a) have an inexperienced commander. b) all sit at the base waiting for guns, when the lmg is just fine. c) Don't take any hives and don't make any efforts to stop the kharaa from getting 2 or 3 hives.
You must be aggressive in the game, run out grab a hive, get resource nodes on the way . Attack their main hive to keep them on their guard, etc.
I think that most marines still try to it like cs ;p , ramboing won't win the game. Going out in a concentrated force , using phase gates for mobility will do the trick . Remember to keep the pressur eon.

If you don't take a hive immediately you will lose. Don't bother having a bunch of guys build a node on the way there. If you have the extra res, get a lone marine to build one. Everybody else should head out to the nearest hive ASAP. Once it's secure, head to the next one. It's all about the fight for that second hive spot. Everything else is secondary.

I'd like to see an alien version of a siege cannon - To prevent excessive uses of it. But I think that would be abused for base assaults almost immediately.
Maybe a less effective Bile, earlier in the game? Just something to help knock out Farms with sieges in them, as they seem to be pretty much impregnable if set up right (I.E By a non noob comm)
I've played games were all marines rush towards one hive... first thing the comm does is to build a cc, then 2 portals.. then TF, Sentrys and Armory..
Then we just capture more and more nodes and puts up siege covered by sentrys, it takes a while.. but 9 of 10 matches i play like this we win, so im happy
I don't mind losing as a marine, because if your comm gets all the permanent upgrades a freshly spawned marine is still deadly, especially in groups.
As an alien it is slightly more frustrating to lose because you are constantly getting insta-gibbed as the hive you spawn at gets taken down... (The servers I play on seem to have a lot of frag-ho's on them...). It is also harder for a marine to start performing lame hold-out tactics since all the entrances are normally covered in aliens...
The aliens can always find a nearby vent to escape and lame through....
Dont get me wrong... I love this game! I've just been playing for the last 10 hours straight... Did the same yesterday...

I'm not sure how many games of NS I've played (over 60 atleast), and I've seen it used 3 or 4 times. Now that surely explains the alien ?berness!
Anyway, last 10 games I've been in, 7 have been marine victories (through sheer numbers most of the time). It's sad how the alien team suffers from lack of players, 7/10 games there's more marines than aliens (usually the 2 more allowed), 2/10 they're even and 1/10 the alien team has more than the marines.

Shrike30 : I would have the items NOT need to be researched again, otherwise this may be TOO much of a penalty to the marines... as aliens losing upgrades isn't that bad, as it doesn't take long to upgrade in the first place, but some of those marine ones cost a fair bit & take a fair while. Or maybe have to do the upgrade again, but have it free for the next time?

That'd bring it into line with alien equivalents, and give marines a reason to defend them.
Would your system have them come back once it was rebuilt, or would the marines have to re-research them?
I think the main reason aliens are winning in this patch is because of the alien resource exploit.
