I was playing on the Fists of Ra server ( 65.120.118.134:27016 ) on ns_bast. My team was small at first, but then we got some more players to join, and the server was packed. With all of the massive skulk rushes and lerk distractions flying around, we were able to secure our second hive quickly.
The marines were quick to press back though, just as we built the third hive(unnamed), they caught us off-guard and began to attack Substation, we retaliated with Fades and pushed them back. We secured the hives, and began assaulting them in the Mess Hall. Massive firefights raged, for some 10 minutes even. Then the blip came up, our hive in unnamed was under attack! I quickly fled, used a conveniently placed movement chamber, and landed right in the unnamed hive. Sure enough, a large marine strike force was trying to take out our hive. About 5 minutes of war raged, yet we managed to push them out, they almost sieged us, but we eventually got our defenses back up and kept them out long enough for the Gorge to tighten the defensive ring.
Next, it was our turn. The marines were battered, slightly **obscenity**, it was time to strike. We began to siege on Mother Interface, their secondary base and an ideal spot to siege Subspace. Two minutes later, it fell. They slinked back to the Mess Hall, where we fought ferociously for control of this crucial chokepoint. I was Fading, mostly lobbing acid rockets and bile bombs at the heavy armor, and then a Lerk saved the day by spraying his spores into a pile of marines who (fortunately for us) got too close to one another. We began to build on the Mess Hall, and started pushing the marines out. About 5 minutes later, we were breathing down their necks, almost ready to assault their base. We won, we celebrated, we munched some jarheaded **obscenity**. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I think this proves just how power struggles can make NS a hell of a fun game. I felt so pumped up, knowing that we had to grab the next crucial chokepoint and hold it, while the marines attacked another one of ours.
Out of this battle, I learned three things:
1.) BE AGGRESSIVE!! Skulk rushes at the beginning of the game? Skulk rushes at any point in the game!
2.) When forces are concentrated in 2 or 3 main areas, success for map coverage increases dramatically. Giving the marines one easy spot to focus on isn't a good thing, regardless of the "strength in numbers" mantra.
3.) Tell your teammates everything, your ideas, your current gestation, plans for hive expansion, etc. It pays off in the long run.
