hey

I haven't seen this bug listed. But man its annoying as HELL! I cant hear marine or alien movement. I can hear any attack sounds, even something as quiet as parasite easily. mic works fine, can hear other people talk. occasionally can hear ips spawning and armoury sounds but sometimes not. Ive validated all the files, removed all mods restarted countless times. Uninstalled my sound drivers and reinstalled. Im sure i tried some other things i cant think of at the moment as well.

Im gonna try uninstall now and reinstall from a mates backup, but i doubt thatll work.

Any ideas?

Hm, I'm running 7.1 (was 5.1 before I fixed it not to auto change back all the time). Don't have this issue. Know people who have complained about it though.

EDIT: Even if changing back to 2.1 from 5.1 fixes the problem, I find this to be a big issue. Who the hell would want to play with 2.1 when 5.1 is available.

Some sounds are played 3d, some 2d, some both, which explains why some are really quiet for you, some are not, and some only play occasionally. Questions for you are
    a) maybe confirm by changing it back to 5.1 again and seeing if it reproduces?
    b) If it does reproduce, does the volume of those soft sounds change depending on your view direction? (behind, above, below, infront)
    c) Were you playing the sound through actual 5.1 speakers, or just headphones?

There were some huge in your face issues with surround sound positioning that seemed to have been fixed for the most part during beta ns2, which is why it's curious to see you're experiencing a problem that sounds very much alike. Personally, the sound in NS2 has never been as crisp, reliable, or accurate as in other games ever since they changed the way sounds were handled many many builds ago (even on 5.1). And since there's like no documentation on what was changed I have no idea where to start looking for a probable solution.

As for more information on surround sound issues that might be helpful. Maybe your problem sounds similar?

You can also get distant sound by being unlucky and alt-tabing.

    NS2 + alt-tabing = sadness :(
