Were you using Steam, perhaps?

Maybe he just used different models already included with HL. It doesn't take much to change the sky setting to purple, for instance. The textures are already included with HL, and all it takes is some minor tweaking.

I've noticed servers that do all sorts of crazy stuff, like on 2fort, add this weird reddish lighting everywhere. Hell, NeoTF is a pretty popular modification, and all it requires you as the user to change is to bind a few more keys.

IIRC, the entitiy properties are sent out to a client, rather than being assumed ot be correct on a clients machine. Therefore, compiling justents with an altered set and using this map on the server would allow any people with the vanilla flavour of that map to play your new funked up version. You can use to to change de_ maps to as_ maps in CS for example, and nobody has do download anything.

There are pretty crazy things you can do provided you're using adminmod-like tools.
I've heard of a server (= never been on it so this might as well be an urban legend) where they changed all func_breakables into trigger_hurts and other 'nice' stuff.

Mind me, but if the people doing this think that you should be burned as soon as you access a vent, they should start mapping and stop toying with other peoples work.

There are a few servers running mini-mods, ie, .dlls that allow them to modify the entities in the map. The moust famous example of this is the server named The SillyZone.
The admins do some crazy stuff on that server, such as light shows using laser beams, and various games through the use of changing func_doors into trigger_multiples. For example, on 'well', the two doors in the middle of the map are converted to triggers, and the aim is to shoot a guy into a goal.

Me and merk might be talking about the same thing but you could accaulty see the guys curse *a red block* and he could add things to the map... *he put a birckwall infront of the emenies spawn entrace !* It was pretty intense...
