Having the map opened 50% of the game time due to maze of tunnels (especially for non-hardcore veterans who knows maps as their own pockets) is pain in the arse.

Bind the map key to one of your mousebuttons. Makes it much easier to use, besides the map is not just for getting around, it's also very useful for map/combat awareness

Unfortunately....the map is a massively important tool in this game. It's not just used for navigation by new players but for map awareness as well like Kouji said. You can use for tons of stuff, simple things like seeing what structure is under attack to using it during ambushes (that you aren't leading) to get a view of the room from the other skulks perspective as they go in...and a million other uses.
Get used to using it. You'll be handicapping yourself if you do not as map awareness is absolutely key to this game.
