Hi,

I just played ns_descent as a lerk and something crazy happened.

In Shuttle Bay, I went under the nose/front of the ship and then I saw a plan (That I never saw before; nor anything similar in the map). The plan was always seeable only from one side.

Since then in a few zones I saw a plane. It was obstructing my view.

We played 2 games on descent. Between the 2 games, the problem persisted. The map didn't change between those 2 games. Respawning didn't correct the problem (obvious since over 2 games)

And I'm dumb; I didn't try with alien vision off :/

Link with a shitload of screenshot of the problem (way more than currently attached; and note that some screenshots are clean to give you an idea of the limit from where the plan wasn't rendered...) : http://www.2shared.com/file/bjSu0Ru8/S4-WTF-Planes.html

RedSword

Evil ship :(

This is a known issue with veil and Geforce 500 & 600 series.. and rarely elsewhere.
But to be sure, it could also be your GPU overheating.. so monitor it with GPU-z (its free) and ensure you aren't getting any hot temps.

I didn't get any low FPS.

I had a normal "fluid" play.

Also, the game wasn't intense (there was no exos or bile bombs; nor grenades). It was lerk/skulk vs marines mainly.

Try cleaning your Gfx card cooling system, if it's dirty I had those problems on a dying 6970 as well.

I had this once in the beta.
I updated my gfx drivers and all was fine. Are you running latest drivers?

I cleaned it less than 3 weeks ago.

The released version before the newest one (314.18 vs 320.18; the only change regarding NS2 (in the changelog at least) concerns SLI profile, which I do not use). I guess I'll update.

But still; it only happened once in a total of ~300 hours.

Newest driver from nvidia has issues for some with ns2, be warned.

GPU artifacts don't just happen with low fps?? You can have 300 fps and still have artifacts from overheating to an unstable OC (even some crap manufactures' stock OC) to just a plain broken GPU.

But you didn't mention whether you a) have this consistently or b) monitored your temps when this happens ?

Edit : if you weren't getting this before you cleaned your card you may want to humor the possibility that you accidentally hurt it, as well :-\

    Goodluck, let us know!

    a) Was consistent when I was seeing it. Didn't monitor my temp.

@Redsword : OK, well how frequent does this occur?
If this was the only time, you may be able to just chalk it up as the engine bug that occurs from time to time for GPUs like i mentioned before.. in which case there'd be nothing you could do. (It is known and being worked on though)

But if it happens frequently it may be worth downloading the free program, GPU-z and then just alt tabbing next time you see those artifacts.

Yea I'd just chalk it up to the known engine bug, then. I think it's happened twice out of 900 hours for me.
Good news is the developers are fully aware of it, and new rendering is on the way! (Opengl and Dx11) which may or may not help :-P
